Resident: Katarina Ranković
Residency period: July 2023
Area: performative arts

Katarina Ranković (b. 1994) uses performance, film and writing to explore the movement, transmission and mediation of “character” in human beings, fictional characters, AI and other kinds of agents. This work has developed over four long-term projects: 1) the "One Woman Empathy Circus," a decade-long series of performance videos in which the artist becomes different characters and sees the world from their perspective, 2) a theatrical séance called "A Ritual Resuscitation of Eternal Lovers," 3) a practice-based research project called "Scripting for Agency" and 4) a novel called Anomaline, which she will be putting the final finishing touches on at Footnote.

Katarina's work has been shown at a number of national and international art galleries, theatres and film festivals, and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2021. She recently completed a practice-based PhD project at Goldsmiths College and teaches Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art.

As a Serb born in Yorkshire, raised in Norway, studied in London and now living in Wales, both the theory and practice of Katarina’s work originates from the daily necessity of inhabiting and switching between many selves.
