Presentation of the Footnote Centre for Image and Text within Sounds Like a Book residency in Șona, Romania, 19- 22 September 2024

In Spetember 2024, Footnote Center for Image and Text had a pleasure to participate in a unique residency dedicated to sound production and book-making.The convergance of experimental sound practices and the creation of artist books is what participants of Sounds Like a Book residency have been practicing fifth year in a row.

Sounds like a Book is a book-making and self-publishing platform that addresses those interested in the book as a medium of artistic expression. As the chosen name suggests, SLB focuses on the visual transmission, conversion, and representation of the sound.

10 artists gathered at the Blue House in Șona village, Brașov county to develop an artistic project employing two rarely connected mediums of expression – sound and book. The working process involved conceiving an artist's book starting from a mental image or from sounds produced/ recorded during the residency program. Hijacking the senses’ routine, the moments planned for field-recording / the recording became the main element in shaping the content and form of the book. The residencies incorporated two workshops and a series of lectures held by artists working in sound art and graphic design.
